An uptempo, a cappella closer will bring your audience to their feet. Takach’s setting of Selma Martin’s timeless words rings so true. This piece demands fiercely that we recognize the common needs among all of us regardless of race, religion, nationality, wealth or status. These needs for nourishment, love, life, and community should be met for all of us, and the intense driving rhythms show the true necessity of the appeal. Voice pairs and repeated motives frame sections of independent voice parts, and, as always, the rhythm and meter of the text is excellently set here by Takach.

It’s so easy to look at other people and immediately notice how we are different. We put people in boxes, categorize them, notice the inconsistencies from ourselves. And yet, there are so many ways in which we are the same, and in most cases, this is more important than listing the differences. All people are different people, right? So let’s understand that as a given and move forward by leaning on the ways we can connect and relate to one another.
